Rajasthan : Abhaneri- the city of brightness

Hidden between Jaipur (95 kms) and Agra is the village of Abhaneri- "the city of brightness", known for its Baolis or step wells. Step wells are the unique concept of India used as royal baths, reservoirs and a respite from the summer heat and Abhaneri is one of India’s deepest and largest step wells, famous for its splendid architectural style. With the excavation of this ancient site having begun in 1955, it has just recently found a place in the route map of travelers and thus offers a rare opportunity to witness an eye-catching architectural antiquity without the crowds. With stairs all around in a geometric pattern, you find yourself in an amazing maze of thousands of steps all descending deep into the abyss of the well. This 1200 year old step well in the present day is in ruins but its structure and delicate carvings are still delightful to the eyes.Abhaneri, also known as the Chand Baoli is believed to have been built by a Rajput King. Sun shaded verandahs, which you can enter, overlook the thousands of criss-crossing steep steps patterned like an upside down Egyptian pyramid. Next to the the Baoli is Harshat Mehta Temple devoted to the goddess Durga. As per the beliefs, the goddess is always cheerful, who imparts her joy and happiness to the whole village. On the walls are the statues & sculptures of Gods and Goddesses which depict images from daily life, and the ruins of the temple still boasts of the architectural and sculptural richness of medieval India.
I suggest adding on the Abhaneri Camp experience to your itinerary visiting Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. Close to the ruins of the Step well is the Camp where you spend the night.
